WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MIGRATORY BIRDS
There are many reasons for birds to migrate. For example, most of the birds migrate to hotter climates in winter because they cannot adapt to cold weather. Some other reasons are reproduction and food. There are many other reasons like this. They have different routes according to their species. Migration is a long and hard journey. Some of the birds die because of food, water and many reasons like this during this journey. Human also has a big effect on that. Because of urbanization, some of them cannot have a rest or they have problems with finding food. And some of them lose their way because of light pollution. Some of the migrating water birds die because of drought during migration. It is so important for us not to harm birds. Most of the birds have problems with digesting human food like bread or simit (A typical Turkish bread which has a “O” shape and has sesame on it). For example, if you are putting bread in front of your window for birds, you are doing harm to them. Birds can find their own food. Water pollution and drought are big problems for water birds like flamingos. And sea pollution of petrol is a problem for water birds. That’s because when they are hunting for fish, they got dirty with petrol and have problems with flying and breathing. After that, they mostly die. We should control our water usage to save birds. Air pollution is a huge problem for birds too. They could have breathing problems. Hunting and climate change are other big problems. So, if you are thinking about what to do I have some advices for you:
Try not to touch birds’ lives or ecosystem because you can harm them while you are trying to help them.
If you are feeding birds feed them with nutritious food like fruit, nuts and nectar. Be careful with hygiene while doing this.
You may do some campaigns like “lights out” in your local area while birds are migrating near your area.
Minimize your usage of toxic materials.
Control your pets that’s why they could attack birds because of their hunting instincts.
Government may enforce people not to hunt birds in their migration seasons.
Birds are a big part of our lives and ecosystem. We should save them. (by Mehmet Alper ONGE, Ari Private Middle School)
